Journal #3- Hostage
Being held hostage would be a very scary event. I can talk all I want about what I might do in a situation like this, but if it ever came to happen, I would probably not be able fight back. Depending on the situation, I might not be willing to live through the encounter. I read a book in middle school about a hostage situation where twins, the daughters of a English ambassador were taken captive. One twin died in conflict and the other was emotionally scarred for life. This book was titled The Danger in the Shadows by Dee Henderson. By reading this book, I have concluded that living through a hostage situation may have consequences way beyond my release. Emotional trauma would probably plague my thoughts after an encounter like this. Just like what happened to the main character in the book, memories of these terrors never truly go away. In the beginning I would try to fight back, but more than likely it would do no good. After that I would submit to my authorities and obey them as long as it did not go against my moral principles. What-if questions like this are always hard to answer because what I believe I would do and what I actually would do are two totally different things. I believe I would have confidence in my own will-power and strength, but when the moment comes, will it show through? The main thing I would rely on in a situation like this is my faith. I would trust God to do His will and worship Him even if I was angry with my situation. This type of faith is very hard to come by and I can only hope to demonstrate it if I was put in this situation. Perseverance would be a quality that I would have to learn quickly or else things might not turn out too good. Its a good thing Im a cross country runner which takes a lot of perseverance through pain to be. Hope is another necessary quality in a hostage situation. I would have to believe that rescue was on the way or else depression and dark thoughts would follow. The rarety of a hostage situation occuring in Pleasant Plains Illinois is pretty slim though. This is a good this, and its a comforting feeling to know that we live in a relatively safe environment.
